My programs worked, our clients got results and our business kept growing. Until I decided it was time for me to fulfill another childhood dream and move to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. I sold my mobile training business to several of the trainers who worked for me… and then…

In 1999, when I arrived in Florida – I decided to open a personal training center. I spent over $42,000.00 on a full line of equipment. 27 pieces to be exact. And over the course of 2.5 years I literally gave away or donated every single gym machine I had purchased.
The open space along with a bunch of basic bodyweight training items and a host of accessories (resistance bands, balls, mats, etc…) really allowed us to break away from the rigid and restraining nature of all the bulky isolation-type machines and the un-necessary “weight-lifting” equipment.
With all that I had done with bodyweight training in the previous 8 years – It felt so un-natural and confining trying to work with clients on these ‘isolation’ gym machines.
We noticed more clients complained of ‘aches and pains’ as opposed to the people we trained in homes/offices. We also noticed our clients had to work longer and harder for their results as compared to the clients we were training using bodyweight exercise programs.
And for me, personally, I wasn’t using any of the machines because all of my own workouts were focused on bodyweight training. See, I had spent my teen years – into my mid 20’s grinding away at my body with all the common gym workouts based on typical weight-training and ‘isolation’ machine routines.

Looking back – I have to say, it was brutal treatment of the human body – even thought it appeared “structured and logical”…
Around this time of my career I realized why so many physical therapists and chiropractors loved renting space inside – or right next door to fitness centers and health clubs. There was simply no better place to find patients who always had some nagging injury or back problem.
Anyway, I realized I needed to find a better way to improve my physique and also enhance my well-being. Walking around with aching joints and a sensitive back didn’t feel like “fitness” to me.
I also didn’t like the idea of spending “more time” for my workouts. As a busy, young dad with lots of responsibilities – I needed efficient workouts that delivered the results I expected – without having to spend 90 minutes in the gym everyday. That just wasn’t going to work in my “real world”…
So, I started taking all the things we were doing with our in-home clients and creating more workouts, with more variety and exercise options – so that even an advanced fitness guy, like me, could get results and keep them for life.
I began looking at furniture differently, looking at basic bodyweight exercise devices (such as chin and dip stand, etc..) and thinking about all the different ways to move the body in relation to gravity in order to get adequate muscle stimulation to produce reductions in body-fat, with increases in strength, muscle tone and natural flexibility.
It was all slowly coming together – when something hit me… For once – I had a brilliant idea….
I told myself…
“I’ll create one piece of equipment which would allow me to do every bodyweight exercise I could ever imagine – And not just for me, but it would also be adjustable for clients who were raw beginners and could only move a fraction of their own bodyweight…”
I then sat down with a pencil and a blank piece of paper. Before I knew it, 43 minutes had passed and I had drawn the first rendition of the gym unit I now use for my own workouts, every day.
I drafted 4 versions of the gym unit. I then took my drawings to an engineering firm, here in Jacksonville, FL, http://www.phi2.com – where Peter Schonning and his team created two virtual models of The Atlas Home Gym Unit…
After a few modifications – we then sent the virtual model files to my production partners in Pennsylvania. Being specialists in steel fabrication and production – they took the virtual model and turned it into an actual, “living & breathing” gym unit. After just 2 months – they had shipped the first prototype to my house.
I was 10 times more excited than the typical “kid on Christmas morning”…
Within 30 minutes I had put the gym unit together and was going through exercise after exercise, variation after variation – so fueled with energy and enthusiasm that my ‘vision’ was now a reality – and it was working even better than I had imagined.
I realized I not only created something which did not exist before – but I now had something to make fitness training more fun, much easier and much more effective for all levels of users.
I started training on the Atlas Unit every day. Putting it to the test – to make sure it held up to all that I wanted to do with it and then some…

My production partners in Pennsylvania built prototype # 2, with the exact modifications I asked for. Once I got it – I put it together and went right back into the workout routine, full-force – pulling no punches…

All I could do was marvel at the fact that in less than a year we had gone from a pure vision to an actual, ready to use, fully-functional and complete, gym unit – one which did not exist anywhere else on the face of the earth.
For months I was so focused on the unit itself and all that I had planned for it – that I forgot about “me”. I didn’t realize it, but I had been working-out exactly how I wanted to. I was now able to do exercises that I was never able to do – simply because I didn’t have the right ‘tool’ to do them on…
But now I did – and the results were really showing…
I had emailed my brother, Dom, a picture of me, taken by my daughter, Alexa – as we were heading home from the beach. And he replied “Holy $#!T, what have you been doing for your workouts??” I told him I had been using The Atlas Unit for 5 months – and at that point I realized how much better my physique looked and also how much better my body felt, overall.
I had even less aches and pains – and had noticed even more flexibility.
